Some of the causes and ways to prevent skin aging

The daily lifestyle and health decisions people make often have a huge role to play on skin aging. When you choose to make unhealthy choices; premature aging of the skin occurs which makes toe skin look a lot older than I should.

It is true that skin aging is natural, according to the American Academy of Dermatology our genes play a large role in skin changes and the medical term is “Intrinsic aging” but, it is also very true that what we do can influence this process.

Our influence can be either positive or negative. Learning what is harmful and starting an anti-aging skin care program can help slow down the skin aging process. In severe cases, it is advisable to see a dermatologist.

Unprotected skin exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun not only increases the risk of skin cancer but, increases the aging of the skin. Use a good sunscreen all year round, including cloudy and dull days to protect the skin from these rays.

Both smoking and second-hand smoking are extremely damaging and a good promoter of skin aging. Research shows that a person’s exposure to cigarette smoke significantly increases skin dryness and wrinkles.

Non-smokers usually do not get wrinkles as early as people that smoke. This is due to the depletion of vitamin C which occurs in the body of people who smoke. The smoke causes anomalies such as dry, rough and scaly skin as well as dry hair. 

Smoking over time also gives the skin a yellow hue sagging, wrinkles, and a leathery dry appearance.

A good anti aging skin program includes getting enough daily physical exercise; this gets the blood flowing, boosts a person’s energy level, makes them look younger, feel flexible, and tones the muscles.

Lack of sleep makes a person feel and look tired with telltale signs such as bags under the eyes, dark circles, and sagging skin. Research shows that adults require eight hours of uninterrupted sleep nightly to look and feel their best to help prevent premature aging of the skin. 

Excessive intake of alcohol contributes to the aging of the skin. It does this by increasing the blood flow and dilating the small blood vessels in a person’s skin. Broken blood vessels and a flushed appearance are permanent results of excessive drinking. So you can imagine what happens when a person drinks and smokes excessively.

Eating proper and healthy foods is a natural way to help prevent premature aging of the skin and this applies to both men and women

A balanced diet of fruits and vegetables is important; not only for your skin but for your overall health as they provide many of the necessary minerals and vitamins you can’t find in other foods.

We can imbibe this habit into children from an early age by teaching the importance of fruit and vegetables so it becomes a lifelong habit. 

Be sure to drink from eight to ten glasses of water daily as this also does its part in slowing down skin aging by keeping you hydrated internally.
